MASS Close Encounters presents evidence of your own eye*: a drawing workshop. The elemental act of drawing allows us to mark our presence in the world, providing an important archive of what we see and experience. Wura-Natasha Ogunji will lead participants through a series of drawing exercises which emphasize the experiential and performative aspects of this art form. Spend the evening making marks on paper of all sizes with your favorite drawing implements. Bring the supplies you love to work with; additional materials will be provided. Previous drawing experience not required.
*This title of this workshop comes from the video We Must Free Our Imaginations in which Kenyan writer Binyavanga Wainaina speaks about the fear of imagination.
Presented in conjunction with Ogunji’s exhibition Your heart is clean on view April 25-May 31
ABOUT CLOSE ENCOUNTERS
As an expression of MASS Gallery’s mission to create meaningful and significant moments for artists and viewers to connect, MASS introduces Close Encounters. In line with the continual effort to provide artists with the physical and mental space to challenge and develop their practice, Close Encounters will be a platform for them to reflect on their process while providing new avenues for gallery audiences to experience contemporary practices.
